Egypt, Arab League condemn Israeli attacks in Syria


CAIRO: Egypt on Sunday condemned Israeli air strikes on Syria, with the Arab League also demanding that the UN Security Council act to stop what it called "Israeli attacks" against the war-torn country.

The Egyptian presidency said in a statement the air strikes "violated international law and principles that will further complicate the situation." The raids reportedly targeted rockets destined for Lebanon's Hezbollah.


Egypt's prime minister unhurt by shooting near his car



CAIRO - Egyptian police on Sunday detained a young man who opened fire on Prime Minister Hisham Kandil's convoy and his four companions in Cairo in an incident the authorities said had no political motive. Kandil was not injured.

The young men were on their way to settle a feud when their vehicle crossed paths with Kandil's convoy at 11 p.m. (2100 GMT)in Dokki, a residential and commercial district of the capital, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Egyptian security services ban film on Jewish community

Cairo: Egyptian security services have banned a film about the Jews of Egypt on the eve of its scheduled release, the director said.

The film, which documents the lives of members of the Egyptian Jewish community in the first half of the 20th century, exploring themes of identity and tolerance, was meant to be screened in three cinemas on Wednesday.
