Indian Railways complete its 160 years

New Delhi:  Indian Railways will complete its 160 years this month. The first train in India started on April 16, 1853. At the occassion, dailybhaskar.com brings you the history of Indian Railways and interesting facts related to it.

You will be surprised to know that ice was used to keep the AC trains cool. A particular system was evolved for the same. The first Indian train started on April 16, 1853 at 3:35 from Bombay to Pune.




The first Indian air-conditioned train was Frontier Mail which was introduced in 1934. Earlier, the AC coaches of the train were kept cool by using ice blocks. These were replenished at several halts along the line. A battery operated blower constantly blew air into these receptacles, and the cold air entered the insulated cars through vents.

British officers used to travel by Frontier Mail. It was a challenge to maintain the temperature of the AC coaches.

On April 16, 1853, the first commercial passenger train chugged out of Bori Bunder, in Bombay to Thane, covering a distance of 34 kilometres. The train was hauled by three locomotives, Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan.

Though the history of rail transportation in India goes back to 1832, it was only in 1853-54 that that first passenger train service was launched by two railway companies, Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) and East Indian Railway (EIR).
